Colon Cancer Surgery

Colon cancer surgery (colostomy) is usually done in the late stages of the cancer. The surgery will remove part of your colon, how much depends on the location and how far the cancer has spread into the wall or your bowel. Other options are radiation or chemotherapy.

In this article we will discuss the surgical procedures. The colon cancer surgery will remove the cancerous part of your colon along with a small part of normal tissue on each side of the cancer, this is to make sure no cancer will remain. Any nearby lymph nodes are normally removed and tested for cancer. The surgeon will then reconnect the healthy parts of your colon to your rectum. If that is not possible, (your cancer is at the outlet of the rectum) you may need a temporary or permanent colostomy. This type of colon cancer surgery is done by making a opening in the wall of your abdomen, then attaching a portion of your bowel to eliminate body waste into a bag. In some cases this is only temporary to let your colon or rectum time to heal. Sometimes this will be a permanent procedure. Colon cancer surgery has a few side effects: pain and tenderness, constipation or diarrhea which should be temporary. (More Signs Of Colon Cancer Articles)

Surgical procedures

If you have a rare case such as familial adenomatous polyposis, and yes the longer they sound the worse they are. Your doctor will have the surgeon remove the entire colon and rectum. This is to prevent any cancer in the future. Your surgeon will construct a pouch at the end of your small intestine and attach that directly to your anus. This procedure is called ileal pouch anal anastomosis, and will allow you to expel waste normally.

Colon cancer surgery does not always have to be this invasive. If you catch it in the early stages then you can have it removed during a colonoscopy. Your pathologist will determine if the cancer in the polyp is not attached to your bowel wall and can be totally removed.

If you have large polyps they may be removed with laparoscopic surgery. This type of colon cancer surgery is performed by making several small incisions in the abdomen wall, then inserting instruments with cameras that will show your colon on a monitor. This procedure has shown to be less painful and also to have less of a recurrence than open surgery.

These are just some of the most common types of colon cancer surgery. Depending on the location and the stage the cancer is in will determine what type of surgery your doctor will want you to have. Early detection is your best prevention of this and any cancer.
